The population is just over 102,624,200. The majority of the population is Tagalog. The weather in the Philippines is very tropical but they are hit with many monsoons, earthquakes and tsunamis. The capital is Manila, and the most popular travel destinations include Ifugao Rice Terraces, Mt. Mayon, White Beach, etc. FoodPhilippines cuisine incorporates many styles and flavours. Their food ranges from fresh, fried, spicy, and sweet. Pork is probably the most used ingredient, as is vinegar. Some of the best dishes include: Lumpia, Sinigang, Chicken Afritada, Cassava Cake, Chicharon and Ube Ice Cream. In the Philippines, they also have banana ketchup. Their cuisine is clearly a bit off the wall, but very interesting! ClothingThe clothing in the Philippines is on the edge between western style and traditional. Their traditional clothing for men includes the barong tagalog. The barong is a shirt they wear over top of a shirt called camisa de Chino. They also wear a hat called the salakot. Women wear an outfit called baro at saya. The baro is a blouse and the saya is a skirt. LanguageThere are two official languages in the Philippines, English and Filipino. However, Tagalog is the first language of one-third the population. The original official language of the Philippines was actually Spanish. 12/9/2016 0 Comments KenyaGeneral InformationKenya is an African country located on the east coast, near Ethiopia, Uganda, Somalia and Tanzania. It is next to the Indian Ocean. The weather varies from arid inland and tropical on the coast. There is approximately 46,790,700 people living in Kenya. The capital is Nairobi, but other popular destinations include Mombasa and Maasai Mara. Nairobi National Park is also an amazing place to visit. FoodSince there are so many tribes and different ethnic groups in Kenya, there isn’t really one set diet. The most common food in Kenya, however, is Ugali. Ugali is a type of thick porridge that is usually served alongside stews. Tomatoes are a very popular vegetable eaten there. When cooking meats, they grill chicken and fish. Yet with beef, they usually fireroast it. Common dishes include: Ugali with Stew, Pilau, Chapati, Irio, Bajia, and Matoke. ClothingIn Kenya, there are no ‘common’ outfits. In the cities, people where Western-style or Arabic clothes. Then each tribe wears different clothes, and since there are about 70 tribes, there are many different styles. One group, the Masai, wear very traditional clothing. The women dress themselves in bead necklaces, and colourful dresses called kangas. The men wear a blanket around their neck called a shuka. As for shoes, they all usually wear basic sandals. LanguageEnglish and Kiswahili(Swahili) are the two official languages of Kenya. Many tribes speak different languages, but nearly everyone speaks either one of these. Swahili is a Bantu language spoken by about 140 million people. Hello = Kabiru How are you? = Habari yako? South Korea’s first female president Park Geun-Hye took office in 2013. The climate is temperate and there are many hills and mountains. The capital of South Korea is Seoul, located on the northwest side of the country. Popular destinations include Changdeokgung, Jeju-Do, National Museum of Korea, and Olympic Park. FoodIn South Korea, rice, beef, egg, and mixed vegetables are eaten almost daily. They love to use all kinds of sauces in their food and stews are very popular. Common dishes include Bibimbap, Bulgogi, Galbi, Dak-Galbi, Jajangmyun, and Kimchi. Some South Korean desserts include Rice Cake, Ginger Punch, Rice Donuts, and frozen fruits. One food item in Korea we are probably all familiar with is Pepero, those thin breadsticks in the picture below. ClothingThe clothing in South Korea has been influenced by Western-style almost completely, leaving very little tradition in their way of dress. A few lasting pieces of clothing that are traditional include a Jeogori, which is a blouse with long sleeves, and Chimas or Pajis. Chimas are skirts women wear, and Pajis are baggy pants. LanguageKorean is the official language of South Korea. That is one of the only languages spoken in the country, but English is taught in schools. 11/20/2016 0 Comments CambodiaGeneral InformationCambodia is a country in Southeast Asia bordered by Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. The population of Cambodia is about 15,957,200. The climate is tropical and monsoon season lasts from June through November. Cambodia has many destination points including Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Angkor Wat, and Bayon. This country is known for Ta Prohm, the temple that was claimed by the jungle. It is used in many films, including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Cambodia’s official religion is Buddhist, and the majority of the population is Khmer. FoodThe food in Cambodia involves a wide variety of ingredients from curry to ginger to fermented fish and ants. Their dishes use a mix of rice, stir-fry, tropical fruits, and noodles. Some of the most popular dishes in Cambodia are: Amok, Kdam Chaa, Nom Banh Chok, and Cha Houy Teuk. In Cambodia, they make coffee with sweetened condensed milk. To make it, you prepare 8oz. of regular coffee and then add 4oz. of sweetened condensed milk to it. ClothingThe most common piece of clothing in Cambodia is the Sampot. The sampot is like a dress worn by both genders, usually of lower-class. It is very similar to a sarong. A kroma is often worn in Cambodia as well. It is a scarf to protect Khmers from the sun. They wrap it around their head, sometimes around their waist, or even neck. The kromas are usually made with woven cotton or silk. LanguageKhmer is the official language of Cambodia, with over 8 million people speaking it across Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, China, France, and the USA. It is very similar to Thai and Lao. The most popular religion is Buddhist, like many other Asian countries. Their summers are rainy, cloudy, hot and humid. Their winters are almost the same, but less humid and less rainy. The best places to visit in Myanmar(Burma) are Yangon, Inle Lake, and Bagan. The country is filled with rich history, and they have many old temples in nearly every city. FoodThe food in Myanmar(Burma) is well-known for not being the best. Many dishes are oily, and don’t have much variety in flavours. They still, however, can be very flavourful when the primary Asian flavours are put into practice: spicy, sour, salty, and bitter. Common dishes are: Mohinga, Burmese Biryani, Burmese Naan Flat-bread and Pe Byouk, Rice and Burmese Curry, Deep Fried Stuffed Tofu, and Semolina Cake. ClothingThe common clothing nowadays in Myanmar is a Paso for men, and a Longyi for women. Paso is a cloth or striped fabric that is very similar to the Indonesian Sarong. A longyi is pretty much the same but with a flowered material and the women wear it differently. Thanaka is a ground tree bark paste used in Myanmar by Burmese women and young girls. It is a cream that they put on their faces to protect their skin from the sun. LanguageBurmese is the official language of Myanmar, with over 32 million people speaking it. Burmese is a Sino-Tibetan and there are many different varieties of this language, including: Beik, Mandalay Burmese, Yangon Burmese, and Yaw. With a population of 68,200,824 and a beautiful climate, this country is a wonderful vacation destination. Nearly everyone on Thailand is Thai, and the official religion is Buddhist. The most well-known destinations in Thailand are Bangkok(the capital), Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. FoodWhen you think of Thai food, most people immediately associate it with sweet & spicy. That’s not always the case though. Thai food uses a combination herbs and spices, they also love to put fish sauce in most dishes. Rice, noodles, curry, chicken, fish, and papaya are often used in these dishes. Common meals include Tom Yam Goong, Pad Thai, Kuay Tiew(noodle soup), and Som Tam. Thai desserts are also really good, and they often include coconut or other fruits. ClothingClothing in Thailand has been highly influenced by western style. However their traditional clothing includes Ruean Ton, Chitlada, Amarin, Borom Phiman, Chakkri, Chakkraphat, and Siwalai. Women’s clothes are usually long dresses and men’s outifits are called Suea Phraratchathan, which has a Nehru jacket with a Mandarin collar. LanguageThai is the official language of Thailand, with Burmese being the second most used language there. The Thai language is derived from the Old Khmer alphabet and is very similar to Lao. The country as a whole is about one tenth larger than California, and the population is about 31,627,428. The capital is Rabat, but Casablanca, Marrakesh, and Fes are the largest cities. Algeria is just east of Morocco and the West Sahara takes up the bottom half of the country. The Atlas Mountains run through part of Morocco. FoodMoroccan food has a lot of variety. Unlike a lot of African countries, they can produce all of their own food. Common fruits and veggies include oranges, melons, tomatoes, sweet (as well as hot) peppers, and potatoes. Since Morocco is on the Mediterranean Sea, many dishes include seafood. Important food items in Moroccan cooking are lemons, dates, almonds, olives, and figs. A staple in Morocco is couscous. Mint tea is served with nearly every meal in a Moroccan household. ClothingMen and women in Morocco often wear traditional clothing. A djellaba is a commonly worn piece that is loose, hooded, and has long sleeves. Women in Morocco also wear a Caftan which is like a djellaba, but without a hood. These are usually worn for formal occasions. The clothing for women include bright colours and nice fabrics. Men often wear an Abernousse for formal occasions, this is also known as a Fez. Balgha is a type of flat slipper that is usually dyed yellow. languageMoroccan Arabic is the official language of Morocco. However, Moor(Hassaniyya Arabic) and Standard Arabic are also spoken commonly. Spanish and French are often used there as well. English isn’t widely spoken, but there are quite a few who speak it. If you want to have a good trip, it’s suggested you learn Arabic or French basics. The population totals around 258,316,051. The majority of the population is Muslim. The weather is tropical, so pretty hot and humid. It can be more moderate in the highlands. Their current president is Joko Widodo, elected in 2014. The Dutch originally colonized in Indonesia in the early 17th century. They titled it the Dutch East Indies. In the 1940s, Japan began to occupy it. After a lot of fighting, Indonesia gained its independence. FoodIndonesian food is based on fresh spices and herbs. Satay is extremely popular in Indonesia. They love meat there, but since a lot of people are poor, it is easy(even generous to your host) to not eat any meat. They make a lot of soups like Oxtail soup and Goat Leg soup. Nasi Goreng is one of the best Indonesian dishes. It is basically just fried rice, but the spices make it incredibly flavourful. Goat, Lamb, and Cow brains are also eaten in a dish called Gulai Otak, pretty much Brain Curry. ClothingPeople in Indonesia typically wear western style clothing, like a t-shirt and shorts. However, for formal occasions, they will add some traditional clothing pieces. Indonesian men usually wear sarongs at home. In public, they only wear the sarong to the mosque. Indonesian women wear a kebaya, and will often add a selendang to the outfit. LanguageOver 700 languages are spoken in Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia(modified version of Malay) is the official language. The current emperor of the country is Emperor Akihito. The highest point in Japan is Mount Fuji, a dormant volcano. Japan has a total of about 20 active volcanoes. Japan can be very humid throughout the year. Winters are cold, summers are hot, and spring/fall are beautiful. Air and water pollution are growing concerns for the country. FoodJapan is especially known for sushi, udon, and rice. They make amazing tempura and delectable sweets like Mochi. Soba is a popular noodle dish. Teppanyaki is a serving style in which the chef cooks on a large iron griddle (teppan) in front of you. Miso soup is one of my favourites. It’s made by dissolving miso paste in fish stock (dashi) and then adding chunks of tofu, wakame seaweed, and sometimes green onion. ClothingKimonos are a very traditional, common, formal clothing piece among women. Nowadays, the Japanese usually wear what Canadians or Americans would wear. Hakama pants, Kimonos, and Happis, are still commonly worn around the country. A 2010 census said India’s total population was 1,173,108,018. The climate varies drastically depending on the region or season. Monsoon season is the largest source of rain for the year, and hot season causes hundreds of deaths every year. FoodSpices, dairy products, lentils, and vegetables are all used daily. Meat is only eaten if the family can afford it. However, more people in India have been eating meat due to an increase in wealth amongst Indians. Indians believe that mangoes produce heat in the body, whereas milk and yogurt cool the body. They have strong beliefs that food influences their behavior, attitudes, and well-being. A standard meal includes vegetables, meat(if they have it) or fish, a grain, some yogurt, and lentils or dal. Chapati, Naan, and Rice are the most common sources of grain for Indians. LanguageThere are a total of 22 official languages, with 13 different scripts, and over 720 dialects. The most widely spoken language is Hindi. Hindi is very similar to Urdu, an Arabic language. The most common greeting is नमस्ते [namaste], basically a formal hello. It literally translates to “I bow to you”. जी [jee] is a common word used for politeness. When greeting someone, you could say “Namaste, Kai-Lei jee” or “Namaste, Hesse jee”.
